City invites museum board to present plans

CARIBOU, Maine — Council has agreed to work with the Nylander board of directors in an effort to revive the historic museum for the city of Caribou.

City Manager Austin Bleess suggested that the Nylander board draw up a formal plan with incremental goals for the museum.

“The plan would be implanted in phases and fully implemented within a specific time frame,” said Bleess. “It would be best to ask the Nylander board to come up with a plan to be presented to the City Council at or before our June 27, 2016 meeting. The plan could be reviewed and agree to by the Council so everyone is on the same page and knows what to expect over that given time frame.”

The manager presented the option of selling the museum and artifacts collection to a private buyer. However, he strongly recommended that Council consider allowing the Nylander board to revive the facility.

“The Nylander Museum and its collection are a wonderful part of the history and culture of the city and it would behoove us to give the Board an opportunity to revive this community asset and bring in funds to help offset operation costs.”
