Veterans’ Cemetery holds Memorial Day observance
CARIBOU, Maine — Nearly 100 people visited the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery on Monday afternoon, to honor the lives of American soldiers who died while serving their country during wartime.
Lloyd Woods, past national vice commander of the American Legion in Maine, acted as master of ceremonies for the event, introduced each guest and delivered closing remarks. Guest speakers included Phil Bosse, Sharon Campbell and Kim Rohn, who respectively represent Senator Susan M. Collins, Senator Angus S. King, Jr., and U.S. Congressman Bruce L. Poliquin.
Harry C. Hafford, chairman of the AMVETS Dept. of Maine, delivered opening remarks, stressing the importance of the veterans’ sacrifices and also outlined improvements that will be made to the Caribou cemetery.
Keynote Speaker Adria Horn, director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans Services, spoke of her own military experiences and also of the collective sacrifice made by all veterans, whether they are living or deceased.
Between speeches, Jamie Deschesne delivered an a capella rendition of the national anthem and Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to be an American”.
Before Father David Cote delivered his Benediction and Master of Ceremonies Woods gave his closing remarks, the Legion Riders of Madawaska delivered a 21-Gun Salute.
