CARIBOU — Thanks to a new grant, more patrons will benefit from the Caribou Public Library’s outreach efforts.
Katherine Wilcox Bosse, youth service librarian, announced that the facility has received a grant of $1,000 from the Maine Community Foundation, Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Trust Fund. The Caribou Public Library was selected for this grant out of 34 libraries in Maine.
The library plans to further its goal of diving into the 21st century by offering quality programs that hold contemporary interest for patrons.
“We offer programs that encourage literacy and provide an educational service. One of our newest programs, ‘Books on Wheels,’ will serve family service organizations such as child care centers or facilities that educate low income families,” said Wilcox Bosse.
She will bring books to the various centers and read portions of the literature aloud to the children. The books will then remain at the facilities for allocated amounts of time, then be transported to another facility.
“This program’s objective is to allow family service centers to borrow library books to increase community literacy skills and enhance patron knowledge of the library’s wealth of information,” Wilcox-Bosse said.
“The subject areas of these books we have acquired are important due to our diverse population in our community including a large contingent with French, Micmac, Maliseet, Swedish, African American, Asian, and Hispanic background,” she explained.
“Offering literature that is unique to children will teach them to accept diversity in the world along with developing bilingualism, multiculturalism, behaviorism and cognitive understanding. This objective of diversified literature falls in line with our mission statement objective of offering education, intellectual stimulation and pleasure to the entire community.”
The new books, when not traveling, will be available to library patrons.
Wilcox Bosse said another family reading program is coming up. “PJ storytime will be a half-hour to hourlong evening program. Parents and caretakers can bring their children to story time where they will be read aloud to. This time frame will meet the needs of those patrons that are unable to visit the library during the day. Young patrons will be encouraged to wear their pajamas to the library.”
