115 Years Ago — June 12, 1901
Newspaper delay — A delay of several hours in this week’s issue of the Republican was made necessary by a break in the main water pipe on Sweden Street, thus rendering the water motor in the office useless while the break was being repaired.
Twins — A cow owned by Octave Demais, who lives in Woodland on the Perham road, gave birth to twin calves recently.
100 Years Ago — June 15, 1916
Early pickings — W.E. Cobb reports the findings of numerous ripe strawberries on his farm last Friday, June 9. This is about as early as ever known in this county, if not the very earliest.
Heavy traffic — If the heavy automobile traffic on the road leading from Caribou to Presque Isle continues to increase as rapidly in the future as in the past, a double-tracked road will be an absolute necessity. On a return trip from Presque Isle to Caribou one night recently, 72 automobiles were met, more than two a minute.
75 Years Ago — June 12, 1941
1941 auto fatalities decreased — The automobiles fatality record of Aroostook County for the first five months of this year shows a 25 percent decrease from figures over the same period for last year, according to the monthly report issued by Henry P. Weaver, chief of the Maine State Police. In 1940, Aroostook had 12 fatalities compared to nine for the first five months of this year.
Three graduate from Colby — Three students from Caribou are members of the senior class at Colby College, which will hold its 120th commencement this June. They are J. Joseph Freme, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Freme, Willetta McGrath, daughter of Mr and Mrs. M.D. McGrath, and Prudence Piper, daughter of Mrs. Clara C. Piper.
50 Years Ago – June 15, 1966
New standpipe in use shortly — A new 300,000 gallon capacity standpipe on South Main Street is nearing completion and will soon be put into service to supply the Hilltop School and the Burgess Village area, as well as providing water supplies for both sides of the street as far south as the Fred Norton property and Polaris Drive-in Theatre. Earl Philbrick, manager of Caribou Water Works Corp., said the water tank could be in operation in two or three weeks.
New voting site — In an effort to slash election day costs, Caribou is moving its voting machines to the Teague Park School gymnasium for Monday’s primary voting. For some years now, since voting machines were purchased by the town, the armory has been the poll center. However, the armory practice has cost the town more than was believed necessary, and the school gymnasium experiment is to be carried out next week.
25 Years Ago — June 12, 1991
CHS graduates 163 — Caribou High School seniors gave their class president a standing ovation following his emotional farewell address at Sunday’s Class of 1991 commencement exercises. Following a speech by Principal James Ugone, the seniors sang their class song, “Friends” while senior Jennita Doherty performed the words of the song in sign language. The Sunday afternoon commencement and Project Graduation party concluded a week of senior activities including the senior banquet, class night, and prom.
Plans for 4th celebration — The communities of Limestone, Loring and Caswell are again planning a 4th of July celebration featuring the longest continuous running parade in Aroostook County, announced Sharon Page, local chamber president. The parade will be held on Thursday, July 4 at 11 a.m. with the route of march through the Limestone downtown area. A full day of events, food and fun booths, music and fireworks will be happening at Trafton Lake as well.
