115 Years Ago — July 10, 1901

Old Caribou house moving— Preparations are nearly completed for moving the Old Caribou House to its new location on High Street, where a stone foundation has been completed, and upon the house will be placed.

The dog days of summer— Farmers have commenced haying, a large number of salmon are now jumping in the pool, and potato bugs are reported to be very plentiful this year.

100 Years Ago — July 13, 1916

Petitions circulated — Petitions are being circulated asking that the State Highway Commission locate the proposed trunk line highway so that it will traverse the most direct route, namely, that known as the main Presque Isle to Houlton road in preference to the suggested route via. Easton.

Open-air performance — The Caribou band gave its first open-air performance concert Tuesday evening, playing on the balcony of the Vaughan House, which has been prettily decorated with flags and bunting for the occasion. Large numbers listened to the excellent music and each selection received liberal applause.

75 Years Ago — July 10, 1941

Runway nearing completion — The Caribou municipal airports’ 3,300-foot east-west runway is nearing completion. The proposed third runway, if constructed, is planned to run in a Northeasterly direction across the two runways, under construction and over the property now owned by the Caribou Municipal Airport.

Ireland letter— An interesting censored letter from Belfast, North Ireland was brought to the Republican office by Virginia Leonard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Leonard. Miss Leonard received the note from Arthur Smyth, an Irish pen-pal, which according to post marks, required approximately a month to make the ocean crossing and reach Caribou.

50 Years Ago — July 13, 1966

40 men to Fort Dix, NJ— Approximately 40 young men from Caribou’s National Guard were hustled off to Fort Dix, NJ last week for basic and advanced training over a period of six months. They received only 24 hours notice of the departure time.

Drawing boys to the gym —School-age boys in Caribou will have an opportunity to see a film on the Boston Celtics this Friday evening at the Youth Center, to meet and greet Caribou’s new high school basketball coach, Jerry Duffy, and also Coach Skip Chappelle of Fort Fairfield. There will be no admission to see the film.

25 Years Ago— July 10, 1991

Unemployment rate up — The Maine Department of Labor announced recently that unemployment in Aroostook County increase in May to 11 percent from the 10.9 percent in April. The rate was also up from 6.4 percent recorded in May 1990, according to Craig Holland, senior economic analyst for the labor department office in Bangor

Letter-writing campaign on — Citizens are urged to write directly to the President of the United States to express opposition to the closing of Loring Air Force Base.
