Young County athletes thrive at state meet

Caribou’s Ochendu takes first in 50-meter dash, Richards in 800-meter run

     BANGOR, Maine — Several Aroostook County athletes picked up victories and many others placed at the Maine Recreation and Parks Association state track and field meet held July 12, 2016 at Cameron Stadium.

    Athletes had qualified at the district meet in Caribou, which began June 29 and after being suspended due to lightning showers wrapped up July 5.

     Athletes garnering first-place ribbons were, in the boys’ ages 7-8 age group, David Ochendu of Caribou in the 50-meter dash (8.81 seconds), Drew Lamoreau of Easton in the 100-meter dash (17.49 seconds) and the standing long jump (5 feet, 5-1/2 inches), Carsen Richards of Caribou in the 800-meter run (3:13.57) and Cayden Ala of Fort Fairfield in the softball throw (81 feet, 6 inches). The Caribou 4×100-meter relay team of Colby Ouellette, Richards, Ochendu and Zay Martin-Williams also came in first place in 1:15.18.

     For girls’ ages 7-8, local athletes with victories were: Victoria Ervin of Houlton in the 200-meter dash (40.59 seconds) and the long jump (4 feet, 10 inches), Rachel Rolin of Caribou in the 400 (1:43.19), Lillian Freeman of Caribou in the 800 (3:54.21) and the Caribou 4×100-meter relay team consisting of Madison Thibault, Freeman, Rolin and Taylor St. Peter (1:25.17).

     In the boys’ 9-10 division, placing first were: Nik Freeman in the 100-meter dash (14.98 seconds) and the 400-meter run (1:18.49), Isiaih Ervin in the 800-meter run (3:11.81), Micah Daigle in the long jump (5 feet, 8-1/2 inches) and the 4×100-meter relay team from Caribou, made up of Corey Freeman, Nik Freeman, Spencer Freeman and Edison Sleeper (1:07.99).

     Girls in the 9-10 age group capturing wins were: Camille Callnan of Houlton in the 50-meter dash (8.36 seconds), Abby Bugbee of Presque Isle in the 200-meter dash (36.12 seconds), Mia Shaw of Presque Isle in the 800-meter run (3:30.54) and the Presque Isle 4×100-meter relay team of Reagan Bernard, Bugbee, Jayden Harvell and Keira Tompkins (1:11.36).

     The 11-12 boys’ division athletes earning wins were: Kye Flewelling of Houlton in the 100 (15.23 seconds) and the long jump (6 feet, 11 inches) Cameron Derosier of Madawaska in the 200-meter dash (32.02 seconds) and the 400-meter run (1:20.88), Mason St. Peter of Caribou in the 800-meter run (3:08.45) and the Presque Isle 4×100-meter relay team consisting of Drake Boucher, Malachi Cummings, Evan Chapman and Gavin Dunleavy (1:08.04).

     Girls who triumphed in their events in the 11-12 age category were: Isabella Ardell of Houlton in the 200-meter dash (33.37 seconds), Elena Ardell of Houlton in the 400-meter run (1:18.36), Jasmine Langley of Fort Fairfield in the 800-meter run (3:24.89) and the Houlton 4×100-meter relay team of Hope Royal, Paige Royal, Kayleigh McNinch and Abby Fitzpatrick (1:07.56).

     For the boys’ 13-14 division, coming in first were: Jordan Duplessie in the 800-meter run (2:58.11) and George Ferland of Union 122 in the 1,600-meter run (6:23.56).

     Girls’ winners in the 13-14 age group were: Ashley Cowley of Easton in the 800-meter run (3:08.56) and Skyler Larson of Houlton in the 1,600-meter run (6:49.2).

     Athletes from Van Buren, Ashland, Washburn and Mars Hill also represented Aroostook County at the competition, which was derived from the Hershey Track and Field Program.
