Low waters — Water in the Aroostook River has been so low during the past week that no water went over the dam. Blueberries are also becoming very scarce around the region.
100 Years Ago — Aug. 10, 1916
Hackett block — Work on the Hackett Block is progressing rapidly. The concrete walls for the second story are in place, and workmen are now busy on the wall of the third story.
Automobiles aplenty — It has been estimated that there were 1,000 automobiles at Fort Fairfield’s big Centennial Wednesday. If the average value of these cars were $1,000, it would represent $1 million.
75 Years Ago — Aug. 7, 1941
Gas stations cut hours —Beginning last Sunday, August 3, Caribou gas and service stations closed at 7 p.m., as is the procedure throughout the eastern part of the country, in connection with the defense program. The opening hour is 7 a.m., stations being closed from 7 in the evening until the same hour the following morning in order to reduce demand and divert more fuel to the war effort.
“Playground news” — This week at the Caribou playground is “on wheels week and pet show week.” Wednesday, the children brought decorated vehicles which were on parade. The girls had a doll show, showing a variety of dolls in their finest apparel. The feature on today, Thursday, is the dog show. Tomorrow will feature a cat show and Saturday, the children will enjoy a treasure hunt on the playground.
50 Years Ago — Aug. 10, 1966
Grade 8 pupils to move — For lack of a teacher and the need of additional facilities, grade 8 at the Holy Rosary Parochial School will be discontinued this year and its students will attend a public school, probably the Intermediate School on the Access Highway. In his announcement, the Rev. Charles Rivard said that a gymnasium for physical education courses and laboratory facilities for science classes are needed, and added that funds are not available for the necessary addition to the building.

Former mayor elected chairwoman — A former major of Caribou has been elected chairwoman of the University of Maine System Board of Trustees. Patricia M. Collins of Caribou was elected Monday to complete the term of David Flanagan, who resigned. Collins is the third trustee head from Caribou, and the second since the University of Maine System was formed in 1968.
Improper parking causes accident — The Caribou Evergreen Cemetery was the setting for a bizarre one-vehicle traffic accident early Wednesday evening. According to a Caribou Police Department official, a 44-year-old man was visiting the graves of a close friend and never heard his vehicle depart over the hill. Upon his returning to his Toyota pickup, he found it missing. The investigation found five gravestones knocked over, along with several flower boxes destroyed. Damage to the 1988 pickup was estimated at $2,000.
