The National Guard Third Platoon, Detachment 1, 185th Engineer Support Company recently finished up a $25,000 job creating an additional 1,700 feet of trail near their Sincock Street facility for the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department.

The Third Platoon, Detachment 1, 185th Engineer Support Company was able to use more equipment and work far more efficiently, given the close proximity of their building to the trail.

According to Parks and Recreation Superintendent Gary Marquis, City Council approached him about the project, and after brainstorming with the National Guard, they decided it would be best to work close to the Sincock Street facility.

“They were able to use much more equipment than they normally would for a project like this,” Marquis said. “If they were to work on a trail located a couple hours downstate, they would only take what they needed, whereas with this project, all of their equipment was right there.”

In addition to significantly assisting the Rec Department, the project also gave about 20 members of the National Guard an opportunity to train with different equipment, such as bulldozers, backhoes, and loaders.

Looking ahead, Marquis plans on extending the Collins Pond walking trail off Sincock, and then looping it behind Aroostook Foods, as well as adding another trail that will tie in from the Washburn Road.

“Having the National Guard work on this project enables me to do more work in the future,” Marquis said. “They did a wonderful job on the trail, and my only out-of-pocket cost was for materials such as rocks and gravel.”
