CARIBOU, Maine — A pair of traditional running events are set for Monday at Caribou High School.
The Caribou Labor Day Road Race will be held Sept. 5, 2016 with the walkers setting off at 10:30 a.m. and the runners at 11 a.m.
The walkers will use a five-kilometer course, while the runners will do an 8K. The race is part of the County Challenge Racing Series. Pizza and drinks are available to all contestants following the race.
The race is a fundraiser for the Aroostook Musterd Scholarship, a $500 award that goes to a 2016 high school graduate planning to run collegiately. The fee is $12 in American funds and $15 Canadian for those over 13 years of age and $10 for those 13 and younger. T-shirts are free to all competitors, but for those not wanting a T-shirt, the fee is $5.
Registration takes place at the CHS ski building. Contact Chris Smith by email at christopher.smith@maine.edu or by telephone at 768-9472 for more information.
A little earlier in the day, the Aroostook Federal Savings and Loan Viking Run will be held at the CHS track.
Registration for the 10 separate children’s races begins at 8 a.m. and the actual races get underway at 9 a.m. Runners from age 2 through the eighth grade are encouraged to attend.
Pre-K and kindergarten runners compete in a quarter-mile run, the first-, second-, third- and fourth-graders in a half-mile run and fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders in a one-mile run.
There will be trophies for the top three male and female finishers in each race. Ribbons and T-shirts will be awarded to all the young athletes who take part.
The event is co-sponsored by the Caribou High School cross country running team.
