The squad is now 4-0 after stopping Fort Kent, Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island last week. The Vikings face a couple road tests this coming week, playing at Old Town Saturday and at Presque Isle Tuesday.
In last Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Fort Kent, Searra Herbert scored the tie-breaking goal and then added a late insurance goal to lead the offense. Megan Thornton got Caribou on the board 10 minutes into the game before the Warriors tied it on Amanda Thibeault’s goal off a direct kick midway through the half.
Ashley Matlock, Maddie Doucette and Hope Shea had assists for the Vikes.
On Saturday, Caribou scored eight times in the first half and added nine more goals after intermission for a 17-1 triumph over the Ellsworth Eagles in Ellsworth.
Doucette notched seven goals despite sitting out the end of the first half and most of the second half. Herbert had a pair and Abbie Caron, Matlock, Thornton, Kerrigan Manter, Shea, Danielle Hanson, Alexis Rodriguez and Gabrille Marquis notched one each. Matlock had a team-high three assists and Thornton chipped in with two.
“We were not running up the score, but that is what it is going to look like,” said Caribou coach Todd Albert. “The girls off the bench and the defenders who were out of their normal positions by moving up to play offense continued to play the game and worked hard.”
Caribou attempted 53 shots to Ellsworth’s two.
Against Mount Desert Island Monday at home, Herbert had the natural hat trick with all the goals coming in the first half, two off Doucette assists and the other from Thornton, as the Vikes topped the Trojans, 4-1. Doucette scored a second-half goal to cap the scoring for Caribou, which attempted 26 shots on goal.
Kerrigan Manter and Jaelynn Doody combined in goal for six saves on eight shots.
“The team did a good job passing and creating chances,” Albert said, noting that Shea was a standout on defense and that Willow Whitten and Marquis had strong play out of the midfield position.
“The girls are all working hard and trying to improve each practice and each game,” he added.
The Caribou boys lost three in a row, 3-0 to Fort Kent, 4-2 to Ellsworth and 3-1 to MDI. In the loss at Ellsworth, Andre Rossignol put Caribou in front before the Eagles scored four unanswered goals. Alex Ezzy scored late in the game for the Vikes off a Cullin Caverhill assist. Ezzy also had Caribou’s goal against the Trojans at home.
The team is now 1-3 and plays at Old Town Saturday before squaring off against the Wildcats in Presque Isle next Wednesday.
“We played hard and it’s all part of the process of improving every time out,” said Viking coach Scott Hunter.
LCS/MSSM played home games against Fort Kent and Wisdom last week. The boys split the matches as they fell to the Warriors Thursday, 3-1, and topped Wisdom by the same score Friday.
Sam Parrot scored off a Tobyn Blatt assist in the loss, while Alex Sprague, Tommy Pinette and Garret Barb netted goals in the victory over the Pioneers. Blatt picked up a pair of assists for the Eagles. Mathew Pelkey handled the goalkeeping chores in both contests, saving 14 of 17 shots against FK and 10 of 11 against Wisdom.
The Eagle girls are now 1-2 after losing to Fort Kent, 3-0, and to Wisdom, 2-1. Emma Vannorsdall put LCS/MSSM in front early against the Pioneers before the visitors scored twice in the final 14 minutes to win it.
The Washburn boys tied Ashland 2-2 last Tuesday and then beat Easton Thursday, 3-1. Both games were played in Washburn. Quintin Thompson and Jovanni Tavares had the Beaver tallies against the Hornets. Tavares scored off a McCall Turner assist to put the Beavers on the board early against the Bears, while Thompson and Turner also had goals.
The Beaver girls were blanked at home by Ashland, 10-0, and they also lost 3-0 to Easton. The team’s record fell to 3-5.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers are again ruling the Class D ranks on the boys’ side. FF took a perfect 6-0 record into its game against LCS/MSSM Tuesday after belting Southern Aroostook at home on Friday, 13-0. The FF girls are 1-4-1 after they tied Southern Aroostook Friday, 4-4.
