115 Years Ago – Sept. 18 , 1901
Press time — The Republican will go to press a few hours earlier than usual today to enable its employees to attend the memorial services in honor of a lamented dead President, Wm. McKinley this Thursday afternoon. Stores will be closed from 2 until 5 p.m. today as well to honor the memory of late President.
100 Years Ago – Sept. 10, 1916
Football league — Plans are in progress for a formation of Aroostook schools in a football league. Among the schools who will be represented are Houlton High, Ricker Classical Institute, Fort Fairfield and Caribou High.
Abrupt leave — R.J. Libby, superintendent of schools, left Monday for Portland on business connected with school matters.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1941
Public schools open Oct. 6 — The opening date of Caribou public schools will be Monday, October 6 as voted by citizens at the last annual town meeting. Superintendent of Schools James A. Hamlin announces that due to the scarcity of teachers resulting from National Defense measures the teaching staff of the Caribou and Limestone schools cannot be definitely announced until a later date.
New pipes — Construction of the new water filtration plant near the Caribou dam by the Caribou Water Light and Power Company is progressing to the point where the concrete walls, the clear well, flour and drains have been completed. Work is now on the wooden structure, and roof over the filter beds starts now.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 10, 1966
Seventh edition here — The seventh edition of the Caribou Cook Book, a publication which has been in existence since 1899, will be available to the public this Thursday. The first Caribou Cook Book was published in 1899 by the Literary Club for the benefit of the Caribou Public Library. Ten years later, in 1909, the project was taken up by the Ladies Aid and has been their project ever since.
Promotion — Darrell Patrick Daigle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Daigle of Caribou, has received his promotion to Yeoman Third Class in the United States Navy at Naples, Italy. The presentation was by Capt. W.W. Kelly, U.S. Navy, chief of staff, commander Fleet Air, Mediterranean. Yeoman Daigle, who has been in the Navy almost three years, will complete two years of overseas duty in February, when he expects to return home.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1991
New teaching principal— The Stockholm Elementary School has a new teaching principal this year. Rob Mocarsky, a native of Hartland, Conn., began his tenure on Sept. 3. He is a 1991 graduate of the University of Vermont, with a degree in early elementary education. He is also teaching the kindergarten class.
Tops in the County — The Viking girls and boys cross-country teams continued their dominance in Aroostook County by capturing the championship Sept. 10 at the Caribou Country Club. The Caribou girls have won the title the past seven years, while the boys squad took the crown for the sixth time in seven years.
