CHS students take part in mock election
CARIBOU, Maine — CHS Principal Travis Barnes and mock election organizer Casey Dobson say the results of a student-held election often reflect the real outcome, as most students are influenced by their parents.
Held on Tuesday Oct. 25, Caribou High School’s mock election involved copies of the official ballot the city will use on Nov. 8.
As of 11:15 a.m., a roughly one third of the school had cast their ballots and Donald Trump was leading by 20 votes.
Zach Whitten, along with Dobson, helped organize the voting project after receiving an email from their social studies teachers during harvest break.
“It was a long process,” said Whitten. “We contacted the state to get official ballots and made several copies.”
The two student organizers said it had been a busy morning, but that they had been handling it well
While they hope to receive a rough idea of the actual election outcome, Whitten says some students don’t take the process as seriously as others
“We had a meatball sub write-in this morning,” said Whitten, “and another student wrote in Michelle Obama.”
