Elks host Saturday dinner for veterans

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 will once again host a free stew night for all military veterans and current servicemen and their spouses on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the lodge at 508 Main St.

The meal, which will be served from 6 to 8 p.m., is “to honor our military Veterans and current servicemen and to express our appreciation for their invaluable service to our country,” said Marion Donahue, exalted ruler of the Presque Isle Elks.

“November for all Elks is National Veterans Month. Elks lodges throughout the nation will be holding special events to celebrate this nation’s military veterans,” Donahue stated.

The traditional Saturday evening meal will include chicken stew, ployes, beef stew, homemade baked beans, hot rolls, corn chowder, corn muffins, chili, fresh biscuits, a variety of desserts, coffee, tea and soft drinks. There is no charge for any military veteran, service member or their spouses. The event will also be open to the public, with a charge of $5 per person.

Veterans and guests will have live musical entertainment to enjoy throughout the evening, as well as door prizes for all veterans and current servicemen.

“It is important that all veterans be recognized for their service to our country,” Donahue said. “Assisting veterans with their needs as civilians is one of the Elks’ most important programs. A fundamental precept of every Elks lodge is that, ‘As long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.’

“During this Veterans Day weekend, all Americans should reflect upon the freedoms we enjoy on account of the sacrifices of our military veterans. We all should say ‘Thank you’ to the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces,” Donahue concluded.

Transportation to the Elks Lodge for this event can be arranged by calling the Presque Isle Lodge at 764-0985.
