115 Years Ago —Nov. 20, 1901

     Starch — The Caribou Grange starch factory has shut down after having made 170 tons of starch.

     Back to work — A.A. Garden, the clothing merchant, was able to be at his store, Monday, after having been ill at home for nearly two weeks with a severe cold.

100 Years Ago — Nov. 23, 1916

     Prosperous? — Is Aroostook County prosperous? Hopkins Bros. of Fort Fairfield recently sold 18 automobiles in one week. That would indicate some prosperity. Yes, Aroostook is rolling in wealth this year.

     Reversed — We have observed many a wagon being towed by an automobile, but this order of things was reversed Saturday when an auto was hauled by a wagon.

75 Years Ago — Nov. 20, 1941

     Malt dealers to meet —All malt beverage licensees in Aroostook County have been invited to attend a meeting sponsored by the Brewers and Maine Beer Distribution Committees to be held in the P. of H. Opera House in Caribou on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

     Selectees to leave — Louis R. Cousins, manager of the Selective Service Local Board office No. 2 in Caribou, announced today that call had been received for 33 men to report in Bangor Dec. 1. This number has already been examined by the local board of physicians but will be examined again in Bangor by regular army physicians. Those passing exams at the latter point may be assured of induction for army service.

50 Years Ago — Nov. 23, 1966

     Free parking — The town office announced that a hearing will be held Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Municipal Building for the purpose of amending the parking meter ordinance. The notice of a hearing was given following a meeting of the council at which merchants of the town appealed for free parking during the period from Dec. 1 until after Christmas. The free meter service during the pre-Christmas shopping period would encourage shoppers.

     Sendoff — A rousing sendoff for the Vikings is planned for Wednesday evening at Caribou High School by members of the C Club and Student Council prior to the team’s departure for its encounter with Stearns at Millinocket this week. The event will also honor the junior varsity and cheerleaders. The two groups will sponsor a pep rally and huge bonfire starting this evening at 6:00.

25 Years Ago — Nov. 20, 1991

     Sign ordinance — An ordinance allowing an off-premise sign at the entrance to the Caribou Light Industrial Park will be drafted for the December meeting of the Caribou Planning Board. The board recently met to discuss a request from the Caribou Development Corp., to place an off-premise business directory sign at the industrial park. The city does not allow off-premise signs.

     New novel — First John: King of the Mountain by Phillip B. Turner of Caribou is now available for $18.50 from the Haystack Memorial Society in Mapleton and the Caribou Historical Society. First John is the story of John Arnold’s attempt to reach the pinnacle of society in Lyndon (Caribou) during the 1850s and 1870s. Turner’s strengths are describing historical and political events and showing social relationships in our region.
