Eugene A. Alward

American Flag ColorNEW SWEDEN – Eugene A. Alward, 89, passed away Saturday night, Nov. 19, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 31, 1927, in Hodgdon, the son of Adelbert and Louise (Murchie) Alward.

     He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, receiving the Purple Heart for being injured during combat in Korea.

     Gene worked various jobs to support his family; at the Drycleaners, movie theater, and as a custodian at the Caribou and Presque Isle Post offices. He was a tinker, working on watches etc. He enjoyed listening to bag pipe music. Gene was a member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden.

     He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma (Johnson) Alward of New Sweden; three sons, Delbert of New Sweden, Alan and his wife, Margaret, of Brooklyn, NY, and Jim and his wife, DeDe of New Sweden; two daughters, Debra Woodard and her husband, David, of Winthrop, and Jeanne Pelletier and her husband, Greg of Caribou; a sister, Maxine Casale of Southington, CT; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

     He was predeceased by a brother, Dana Alward; and a sister, Gwennie Marzal.

     A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover Street, Caribou, with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will be at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou.
