Michaud, Jandreau shine in tourney

A pair of Caribou Viking wrestlers garnered silver medals at the PVHS Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Howland.

Junior captain Evan Michaud came in second in the 126 lb. division after collecting three victories by pin before losing on a 10-2 major decision to former Viking wrestler Marcus Caudill, now representing Foxcroft Academy, in the finals.

Cory Jandreau, another junior captain, also placed second by going 4-1 on the day. He also won by fall in all his victories but lost by technical fall (15-0) in the championship round to Dexter freshman Gage Stone.

“They were both outstanding until the finals, where I feel better mental toughness and preparation for those matches would have put them both over the top,” said Caribou coach James “Chico” Hernandez. “Technically, they are improving at a very fast rate but consistency is a must if you are going to be a champion.”

Spencer Soucy, competing in the 195 lb. division, place fourth.

Twelve teams participated in the tourney — all members of the Penobscot Valley Conference.

“We are a very young team with the lowest numbers turning out this year,” Hernandez said. “We are waiting for a few who are academically ineligible and the development of a few new wrestlers before we get them in the game.”

On Dec. 3, Caribou was in Howland for the annual PVHS Preseason Tournament and Michaud came through with the title. Jandreau was second in 138 and Jarred Jordan the runner-up in 285, while Soucy placed third in the 195 category.
