LIMESTONE, Maine — Lily Tedford, a junior at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), was recently selected as one of only two students representing Maine as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C., next April. This selection also includes a ten thousand dollar college scholarship award.
A native of South Portland, Tedford first entered MSSM in the fall of 2014 and quickly shared her passion to serve others by becoming an Admission Ambassador, a position she has held throughout her career at the school.
In addition, she was elected to MSSM’s Student Senate, along with holding offices in the French Club and on the Prom Committee. Tedford is the editor-in-chief of MSSM’s literary magazine, the “Calculator Active,” as well as a member of the Key Club.
In her free time she enjoys athletics participating on the school’s soccer, volleyball and track teams.
Reflecting on her recent recognition, Tedford said, “I recommend more of my classmates should follow up on the numerous invitations to apply to such programs as USSYP. They provide the opportunity to meet other amazing students from around the state.”
She will soon engage with even more passionate youth from around the country when she travels to Washington, D.C., later in the school year.
Tedford’s journey began with an invitation from MSSM’s dean of faculty, Deb McGann, who encouraged all juniors holding an elected office to apply. McGann then reviewed the applications and subsequently nominated Tedford as the MSSM entry.
Tedford’s essay discussed the timely issue of voter disenfranchisement throughout the American electorate.
