115 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1902
Intellectual treat — The fine people of Caribou were given a treat last Tuesday evening when Mrs. May Frances Stetson gave her celebrated monologue recital of the tragedy Macbeth to a large and enthusiastic house, which was help spellbound from beginning to the end.
Cows — Quite a number of cows are in this section, an unusual occurrence at this season of the year.
Move — On Wednesday, the Pattee Co. moved its stock of dry good from the Odd Fellows’ Block, where it has been located for a long term of years, into the large store corner Main and High streets formerly occupied by Frank RIley.
Depth — It is understood that the snow in the woods is more than three feet in depth.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1942
Ski School — James Briggs, popular Caribou ski enthusiast has recently accepted a position as Director of the Ski school at the Belknap Mountains Recreational Area at Guilford, Laconia, NH. Briggs, who left Caribou today, will assume his new duties at the million dollar development. Briggs will have six instructors under his direction.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 11, 1967
Accident — Wilson Doak, 31, Saturday was said to be in satisfactory condition after his throttle stuck open on a snow sled he was operating and the sled shot from a field out onto Sweden St., striking an eastbound 1963 sedan driven by Mary Helstrom, 36, of Caribou. Doak have to undergo surgery after a fractured hip and possible concussion.
Sugar crystal — For the first time in the history of the state, a sugar crystal was produced in Maine Tuesday. The time of the epic event was 2:17 p.m. at the producer was a Mine Sugar industries of Easton. A finished beet sugar product at the plant was expected within two or three days, it was said.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 8, 1992
Sworn in — Caribou City Councilor members Richard Fortier and Phil Bennett were sworn in for their three-year terms Monday night, Jan. 6 by City Clerk Sylvia Akeley. Fortier is returning to the council after an absence. Bennett was re-elected.
First baby — Shane Steven Cyr, the son of Angela and Steven Cyr of Caribou, is the first baby of the new year to be born at Cary Medical Center. The baby boy was born on Thursday morning, Jan. 2, at 5:15 a.m. Shane was born seven weeks premature at had to be transported immediately after birth to EMMC in Bangor. He weighed 4 pounds, 5 ounces at birth and was 17 inches long.
