CARIBOU, Maine — The Vikings hosted their only wrestling meet of the winter Saturday with several teams converging at Caribou High School for a tournament.
Jandreau, who was celebrating a birthday, won by fall over a pair of Mattanawcook Academy wrestlers — Daegan Eastman and Nick Larrabee — to take the title. Caribou’s two juniors turned in solid performances, with Cory Jandreau winning the 132 lb. division and Evan Michaud taking second place in the 126 category.
“He did not place in this tournament last year, but it was a different story Saturday,” said coach Chico Hernandez. “He has been in a funk lately, so he really needed this as a confidence booster. He was relaxed and confident and looked very tough and smooth against a couple good wrestlers.”
Michaud defeated Bucksport’s Nick Prins in the semifinals by a 19-8 decision to earn a berth in the championship round against Jacob Emery of John Bapst. Even though Michaud lost, 10-6, Hernandez said it was one of the best matches of his career.
“Emery is a very good wrestler, but Evan wrestled tough and just a mistake here and there cost him,” Hernandez said. “I think that match will serve him well in the future and will prepare him for the regionals.”
The Vikings had three matches Thursday in Lincoln, winning a pair of close ones over PCHS (36-30) and PVHS (36-24) and losing to the host Mattanawcook Lynx, 51-6. Caribou improved their record to 4-4.
The Vikings have a meet in Howland Wednesday and then travel to Dover-Foxcroft for another on Saturday.
