CARIBOU —George Melvin Morgan, age 93 passed away at the Maine Veteran’s home on January 9, 2017. He was born in Caribou, September 9, 1923, the son of Clifford and Doris Damon Morgan.

He graduated from the Caribou High School in 1941, where he was on the track team and a member of a local jazz band where he enjoyed playing the trumpet. He enlisted in the army in 1945 and through the GI bill he attended and graduated from the New England School of Embalming and Science in 1948. He worked for the GM Morgan furniture company and the family owned Caribou Movie Theater with his father, uncles and aunt and in 1963 he became a partner in the Morgan funeral home. In 1958 he started his own business called GM Morgan flooring. He and his second wife Dorothy built a new building on South Main Street in Caribou in 1971. He was in business at that location and also owned the Montgomery Ward franchise store until he retired in 1982. George also was a member of the Presque Isle Barber Shoppers chorus and quartet where he enjoyed singing base. After retirement, he became a snowbird and would winter in Florida for the next 15 years.
George was predeceased by his first wife Mabel Wallace Morgan. They had three daughters: Sally Jane Morgan Blackman and son-in-law Dr. Bruce Blackman from Waterboro, Maine and Ann Morgan Gahagan and son-in-law,
Michael Gahagan Caribou, Maine and Susan Morgan Erickson and son-in-law Dean Erickson, Fort Collins, Colorado. He has nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His sisters are Barbara Morgan Pike (dec) and brother-in-law Frank Pike (dec) of Caribou, Peggy Morgan Matthews and brother-in-law Roger Matthews of Avis, Pennsylvania. He was also predeceased by his second wife Dorothy Libby Morgan. His stepchildren: Arthur Libby, Gale and Bob Biscoff, Richard and Karen Libby, Terry (dec) and Hank Bercier. He has four step grandchildren and three step great- grandchildren. Mr. Morgan was the longest and oldest lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge in Caribou.
Per Georges wishes, he will be cremated and his interment will be at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Caribou. He also requested that there be no services. Arrangements are being made by Lancaster Morgan funeral home in Caribou.
