UMPI women and men close season on good note

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Owl women’s basketball team (8-15) needed a fourth-quarter comeback to end its regular season on a three-game winning streak. The Alfred State Pioneers (14-9) let an early lead slip away and lost Sunday at UMPI’s Wieden Gymnasium, 63-59.

Alfred State held a lead of 25-12 after one quarter and was up 35-22 at halftime, but UMPI rallied to tie it late in the third quarter. In the fourth, The Owls’ Rhylee Wright nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 51 with 3:23 left and then UMPI took its first lead since the early stages of the game when Kylee Alton sank a jumper. Sydney Churchill hit a 3-pointer and and some late foul shots as the Owls held on and finished 8-15 overall.

Amanda Hotham had 19 points and 11 rebounds to end her UMPI career. Wright scored 16 points and hauled in 16 rebounds, while Churchill finished with 17 points.

Alfred State dropped to 14-9 with the loss.

Men defeat Landmark to finish over .500

On Friday, the Owl men’s team finished up its campaign with an 81-46 over Landmark College in Putney, Vt.

Coach Mike Holmes’ team displayed excellent balance as all 11 players reached the scoring column. Senior Nick Lenhard went 5 for 6 from three-point distance and led the way with 15 points. Jordan Cook came off the bench to score 11 and Derek Healy had 10 as both also closed out their collegiate playing careers.

Anthony Collins, Kim Collins and Kevin Collins all tallied nine points apiece for the winners, who ended up with a record of 12-11.
