PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle Girls Hockey Youth Team moved one step closer to its goal of becoming a team last week when it received a donation of $2,001 from the Presque Isle Savings Bank of  Maine.

Bank representatives presented the organization with the “Gold Level” sponsorship after bank Senior Vice President Susan Grove-Markwood heard a presentation from players Melanie Maynard and Hillary Albert at a recent Presque Isle Rotary meeting.
“Melanie and Hillary did an excellent job with their presentation and are very enthusiastic about the sport [of hockey],” Grove-Markwood said. “We are pleased to help them with their goal of establishing a Presque Isle girls varsity ice hockey team. It is exciting to be a part of this community effort and help these young women who are working hard to raise funds for this project.”
Support for the project has been exceptional thus far.
“I want a girls team so that we can play in the newly-formed Maine Girls Varsity Ice Hockey League and represent Presque Isle High School,” said Maynard, a junior at PIHS.
“We are continuing to ask local businesses for support to meet our goal,” Albert added.
The group plans several additional fund-raising events in the coming weeks. The group will have a booth at The Forum for the upcoming Balloon Festival and will also be present at the Women’s Expo and Fall & Winter Expo. The Mapleton Lions Club is also having a bean and ham supper/auction on Sept. 19 to support the girls team.
Thus far, the hockey squad has been to more than 80 local businesses. Their project is still in consideration to receive funding from five different grants.
