The state ski championships were held last week, with both the Caribou boys and girls coming through with fourth-place finishes in the team results on the Nordic side.
The Class B Nordic meet was held at Sugarloaf Feb. 23 and 24. In the classic race held on the first day of competition, Caleb Brown placed 11th in 18:45.9 to help the Vikings to a third-place finish. Also for Caribou, Alec Cyr was 15th in 18:59.2 and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr 16th in 19:02.4 to complement Brown’s performance. Teammates Bryce Coffin, Devin White and Evan Desmond were all in the overall top 30.
In the skate race the following day, Cyr was ninth in 15:27.5, Coffin 16th in 15:57.1 and Brown 19th in 16:04.5 to lead the way as the Vikings were fourth in the team standings. Noah Hixon, Duplissie-Cyr and Desmond were all top-30 finishers.
For the girls, Erin Kashian led Caribou in the classic race in 21:56.5, good for the 12th position. Claiming the 17th through 20th places, respectively, were Kendra Furber, Abigail Wimmer, Ciara Richards and Jojo Fields. Caribou was fourth in the team results.
Furber came in 13th in 18:49.9 to pace the Vikings in the skate competition. Four teammates were in the top 20, with Richards taking 15th, Kashian 16th, Wimmer 18th and Madeline Gudde 19th as the team again placed fourth.
Maranacook swept first-place for both the boys and girls.
Alpine races were held Feb. 21 and 22 at Black Mountain in Rumford. Hope Shea of Caribou came in 12th in the slalom in 1:49.88 after not being able to finish the G.S. the previous day. Maren Moir also competed for the Vikes For the boys, Scott Bray was 28th in the slalom in 1:48.02 and 37th in the G.S. in 2:00.96 to lead Caribou. Nathan Pitre, Aidan Plante, Ghent Durepo and Tiernan Barbosa also skied.
In the Class C Nordic competition held at Quarry Road Trails in Waterville Feb. 23 and 24, Padraig Keith-Hardy came in seventh in the boys’ skate race in 17:17.3 to lead MSSM, while teammate James Cyr was 12th in the classic event in 22:15.4. Others competing for MSSM were Oliver Wainman and Sanyu Feng.
On the girls’ side, Fort Fairfield’s Jessica Halsey had a solid state meet by placing 14th in the skate race in 23:34.4 and 16th in the classic race in 29:41.5. Amanda Halsey, Dixie Grady and Kaley Norsworthy were the other FF skiers.
For MSSM, Samantha Zwecker took 20th in the classic in 30:07.9 and 24th in the skate in 25:47.1. Naomi Kihn was the next fastest MSSM skier, while Rothery Sullivan, Sophie Moore, Madelyn Battock-Emerson and Isabella Martin were others on the team.
