FORT FAIRFIELD, MAINE — Senior homeowners can breathe a bit easier when it comes to household emergencies, thanks to a donation from the local Fire Prevention Board.
In January, the Housing Authority of Fort Fairfield (HAFF) launched a one-year pilot program called the Home Modification for Seniors Program (HMS). The program is aimed at helping senior citizens or disabled homeowners by providing safety and accessibility modifications throughout their homes. These modifications include items such as handrails, grab bars, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, proper LED lighting, shower seats, shower wands, toilet railings, minor flooring repairs and more.
On Thursday, March 2, 2017, Jon Cote of the Fire Prevention Board, a firefighter with Caribou Fire and Ambulance and a member of the American Red Cross’ Aroostook Advisory Board, presented the HAFF with a $500 check in support of the HMS program. The funds will help purchase smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
On top of the board’s donation, Cote will host a “Remember When” presentation to Housing Authority residents and local residents 62 and older. The presentation, centering on fire and fall prevention, will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 1 to 3 p.m.
The location will be determined by the number of people who sign up; to RSVP, call the HAFF office at 476-5771.
