The first softball umpires class is set for Wednesday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Sargent Community Center in Presque Isle.
Classes will be held weekly for approximately a month. Steve Thibodeau, who serves as the deputy umpire-in-chief for the Northern Maine Softball Umpires Association, said there is a definite need for more umpires in the area.
“We only had 20 umpires covering all the middle schools and high schools from Fort Kent to East Grand to Katahdin,” Thibodeau said.
He noted the cost for new umpires includes $76 in dues and approximately $100 for uniforms to get started, but that it’s easy to make that up depending on a prospective umpire’s availability.
“This is an investment that pays you back instantly and shows profit in the first year with minimal work,” Thibodeau said, noting that the earnings for middle school games is over $35.
“If you work only three games a week for five weeks, you will make over $500 that first year and if you available to be at games everyday, the possibilities are there to make much more.”
