WASHBURN, Maine — Eighth-grader Reed Plummer was welcomed back to Washburn Elementary School on Monday, March 13, and was much missed since last fall, said Principal Melanie Cote.

Plummer, age 13, is returning after his second time receiving treatment for a brain tumor.

“We are thrilled to have him back,” said Cote. He is is “well liked by his peers and he was certainly missed here at Washburn Elementary School.”

Plummer underwent brain surgery at Maine Medical Center in Portland and also spent time receiving chemotherapy in Boston. While he was out of school, Plummer also kept up with classes thanks to his mom Trina and tutoring services offered by the school.

During his absence, Plummer’s peers and school staff organized a fundraiser and decorated the school for his return Monday, accompanied by his parents and grandparents.

Members of the community also raised $1,500 through GoFundMe to help with the family’s expenses.
