Officers elected — Town meeting was held in the Grendell Schoolhouse and the following officers were elected: Moderator, G.L. Hodgdon; clerk, Philip Adams; selectmen, E.L. Grendell, G.H. Dean, G.L. Hodgdon; School Committee, E.D. McLaughlin; Collector, Mark E. Chandler; Treas., L.A. Foss. Money raised: Schools, $750; high school, $30; roads and bridges, $700; cross road, $300; center line road, $100; repairs and appliances, $75; textbooks, $75; debts and interest, $250; town expenses, $600; support of poor, $150; state road, $300; repairs on state road, $50; and woodshed for Fillmore school, $50.
Two famous pictures — The Aroostook Anti-Tuberculosis Association had been fortunate in securing for two weeks the loan of two famous moving pictures, “The Temple of Moloch” and “The Price of Human Life”, gotten out by the Edison Co., especially for use in anti-tuberculosis work. These pictures were shown at the Presque Isle Opera House.
75 Years Ago – March 12, 1942
All-Aroostook team — Three Presque Isle Wildcats, Jimmy Hayes, Richard Dick and Malcolm Tuck were named to the All-Aroostook League basketball team as selected by the coaches of Spudland’s Senior Circuit. The first team lineup comprised: Stevens, Fort Fairfield, Hayes, Presque Isle, forwards; Dick, Presque Isle, center; Tuck, Presque Isle, Weeks, A.C.I., guards. The second team awards went to: Bouchard, Caribou, Clark, Fort Fairfield, forwards; Cary, Washburn, center; Richards, Presque Isle, Watt, Fort Fairfield, guards. The announcement of the All-Aroostook League teams was made by William Hanscom, league secretary. Steven and Tuck were unanimous choices for the first team.
50 Years Ago – March 16, 1967
Represents VFW — Olen E. Holmes, of Presque Isle, took part in the annual Mid-Winter Conference of national and state officers of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States at Washington, D.C. A member of the VFW National Council of Administration, he represented Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Throughout the day, he attended committee meetings dealing with policy for the national VFW and participated in briefings on national security and legislative affairs held by high-ranking civilian and military leaders in the federal government.
Carnival winners revealed — High School students competed in skimobile, snow sculpting and skiing as part of the Winter Carnival Weekend. The Hi-Y bid in the snow sculpture event took the honors, reported Sue Gartley, publicity chairman. Title of the sculpture was “Happiness is World Peace,” and it showed two huge hands clasped in a solemn handshake. Daryl Kelley won the boys’ skimobile events. Mary Ann McHugh took first place in the girls’ event. In skiing competition, Eric Henderson and Randy Marino won on the boys’ side and Karla Harris, Carmen Bishop and Debbie Johnson were tops for the girls.
25 Years Ago – March 11, 1992
Academic recognition — The 1992 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges included the names of 15 students from the University of Maine, Presque Isle, who had been selected as national outstanding leaders. Campus nominating committees and editors of the annual directory had included the names of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. Students named were Rena Mae A. Levesque and Faye B. Craig, both of Ashland; Paula J. Small, Oakfield; Leslie Sadler, Fort Fairfield; Mary Kay Moreau, Dawn D. Martin, Melanie J. Adams and Daniel A. Hersey, all of Presque Isle; Mary T. Bridgham, Loring AFB; Wendi L. Webber, Blaine; Beth A. Corrow, Caribou; Timothy G. Smith, Dover-Foxcroft; Larry J. Kingsbury, Bridgewater; Robert L. Deveau, East Millinocket; and Scott P. Thompson, Mapleton.
Agent honored — Ronald Kofstad of Presque Isle, a qualifying senior agent with Farm Family Insurance Companies, was honored at the company’s annual All-American Conference held January 16-20 in Cancun, Mexico. Kofstad was chosen for membership in the President’s Club, the prestigious organization for the firm’s top producers. From a field of over 200 agents, he placed among the top 15 for property and casualty insurance sales. Kofstad had been with Farm Family since 1975.
