115 Years Ago – Mar. 11, 1902
Stone laid — Stone has already been hauled for the foundation for the vault of the new Caribou National Bank in the Grimes’ Block, corner of Sweden Street and Vaughan Avenue and work on remodelling the store suitable to the needs of the new bank will be pushed rapidly forward.
Spring is coming — Farmers have been very busy this week, taking advantage of this fine sledding and potatoes have been hauled in at a lively rate.
100 Years Ago – Mar. 15, 1917
Bids too expensive — Postmaster Fred S. Doyle has been advised by the postal authorities that all bids made on the building of the new Caribou post office have been rejected as being too excessive. The department will now draw up other plans and advertise for bids as before. This delay does not appear very auspicious for a new government building this year.
Snow depth — It is stated that there are five feet of snow in the woods. Indications are that this will be a good spring for maple sugar.
75 Years Ago – Mar. 11, 1942
Air Raid Warden course to start — An announcement was made today by Philip R. Mealey that an Air Raid Warden’s course would be held five days weekly at the Caribou High School, open to members of the senior class and women of the town. The course will start Monday, March 16 being held Monday through Friday at 3:15 until completion of the course.
Fashion show — The following is a list of the merchants who will present models at the annual Easter Fashion Parade to be given by the Business and Professional Women’s Club at the High School auditorium Thursday evening, March 26: The Betty Barbara Shoppe; L.S. Hall Co., Jc. Penney Co., Patte Co., Bonney’s Hat Shop, Blanch Brisette’s Dress and Hat Shoppe, and Mable Allen Beauty Shop and the Doris Beauty Shop. Mrs. Ralph Roberts is general chairman and Mrs. O.P. Pierson will be the style commentator.
50 Years Ago – Mar. 15, 1967
“Get out and Vote” — Town and Chamber of Commerce officials and other groups are expected to spearhead a “Get Out The Vote” drive in Caribou within the next few days as the community stands on the threshold of becoming a city; the most most northeastern one in the United States. Monday, March 20 is the civic election day in Caribou this year. According to civic leaders, at least 600 voters must turn out to the polls for the referendum to be enacted.
That’s a lot of Thin Mints — Junior Girl Scout Troop 105 sold 1,536 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, topping last year’s sales. The girls turned in their returns at a meeting at the home of leader, Mrs. Dorothy Philbrick. Carla Harris was top salesman with 344 boxes.
25 Years Ago – Mar. 11, 1992
Kieffer announces run — R. Leo Kieffer of Caribou announced March 10 that he will be a candidate for the Maine State Senate, Senate District 2, in the June 9 primary election as a Republican candidate. Kieffer is currently serving his fifth year on the Caribou City Council, having served two years as deputy mayor and is now serving his second term as mayor of Caribou.
Teen pageant — Kristi Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Caron of Caribou and Gerald Martin of Pennsylvania, has been selected as an entrant in the 1992 Miss Maine Teen USA Pageant to be held March 14 and 15 in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Tara in South Portland. The state pageant will select the Maine representative to the Miss Teen USA Pageant, which will be televised in August.
