100 Years Ago – March 21, 1917
Passengers — The Bangor & Aroostook Railroad handled approximately two thousand passengers to this town the first two days of the auto show. Each train into Houlton was packed to the doors, and some of the trains were crowded so the conductor could not work his way through.
Window attraction — Millar, the candy man, had on exhibition in his show window during the auto show an attraction in the way of a miniature auto made entirely of candy. It was complete in every detail, top, spare tire, number plate, etc.
75 Years Ago – March 19, 1942
Crowd — A crowd estimated at 2,500 people from Houlton and surrounding towns attended the opening of the Houlton United Service Organization Club which was held in conjunction with the national USO Open House program. John C. Gill, representative of the National Catholic Community Service which operates the Houlton unit for USO, was present. William J. Dohoney, Club director, was very much pleased with the response of the public to the general invitation to visit the rooms.
Studio work — Hesketh the sculptor, former Houlton resident, exhibits her original art-form in New York. The Houlton High School graduate uses pattern of marble in her designs.
50 Years Ago – March 22 , 1967
President — Jack Ketch, manager of the Sherwin-Williams Co. store, has been elected president of the Houlton Rotary Club for the coming year. He will succeed Forrest Barnes, and will be installed at the club’s annual meeting in June.
Graduated — Seaman Recruit Stephen A. Irish, 18, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elston Irish of Sherman Mills, has been graduated from nine weeks of Navy basic training at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill.
25 Years Ago – March 18, 1992
Young Authors — Nine students are involved in Lambert Elementary School’s Young Authors Program. They are: Chris Brushett, Melanie Murphy, Melissa Caron, Christina Higgins, Misty Starbuck, Lindsay Edgar, Darren Kelley, Curtis Johnson and Lucas Ritchie.
Math Champs — Grade six students Derek Mills, son of Dwight and Linda Mills, and Phillip Merritt, son of Steven and Brenda Merritt, scored third and second respectively in the Aroostook County Math Meet. They represent SAD 29, along with several grade six students from Lambert Elementary School, in the County Meet at the University of Maine at Presque Isle in April. Mills is a student at Wellington School in Monticello and Merritt is a student at Littleton Elementary School.
