Cub Scouts race in Mapleton

MAPLETON, Maine — On Saturday, Feb. 10, the annual area Cub Scout Pinewood Derby model car races were held in Mapleton.

On racing day, over 40 Cub Scouts participated in this year’s derby. To add some additional fun to the races, brothers, sisters and fathers who are not members of one of the Cub Scout packs were allowed to participate in non-competitive races.
This year Teddy Donovan won first place and Tucker Lamoreau took second place, while Eli Jandreau and Daxton Jordan took third and fourth places, respectively.

Cub Scouts began Pinewood Derby racing in 1953, and the Scouts in the central Aroostook area have been racing for many years.

The cars are start as blocks of wood with plastic wheels and nails used as axles.  Each Scout is required to use all of the kit’s nine pieces and then carve, shape and decorate his or her wooden model racer. The cars are powered by gravity down a sloped 32-foot aluminum four-lane track.

Building the cars are fun activities for Scouts and their families. The Scouts get to show their artistic flair in the design and painting of their cars. Additionally, making and racing these cars is a great STEAM. Project (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics).
Congratulations to all of the participants and winners in the derby. Thanks to all the leaders and volunteers who make these races possible.

As part of the Mapleton Lions Club’s sponsorship of the Cub Scout Pack 176, they make the Mapleton Lions Hall available to the Scouts free of charge. The Scouts thanked them for their support and commitment.
