Upsets in the world of sports are always special and such was the case Tuesday afternoon as the No. 5 Southern Aroostook (10-5) girls soccer team upset No. 4 Schenck/Stearns, 3-1, in a Class D North quarterfinal.
Local runners put in strong efforts at the Class C and B regional cross country championships at Troy Howard Middle School Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Houlton football team will host a home playoff game for the first time in the modern era after the Shires blasted Schenck/Stearns 34-0 Friday evening in the regular season finale.
When voters in Houlton go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 5, they will be asked to select two individuals among five candidates for the Houlton Town Council.
Friday was a busy day for soccer playoffs with five local squads hosting playoff games, and several others on the road. The quarterfinals are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday, with semifinal games on tap for Saturday, Nov. 2.
“The girls fought really hard today,” Madawaska coach Thomas Gerard said. “Hodgdon gave us a really good game. Everything that I’ve heard about them was true. They were athletic and played with a lot of heart. It was a great 8-9 matchup. I love games like this because they show the true spirit of high school athletics.”
No. 4 Hodgdon shut out No. 13 Woodland, 3-0 Friday afternoon. The Hawks (13-1-1) will now host the winner of Saturday’s prelim game between No. 5 Easton and No. 12 Southern Aroostook in the quarterfinals.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 at the halftime break, before the Shires erupted in the second period to put the game away.
Aroostook County will be well represented in the upcoming soccer playoffs as 25 teams from the area have qualified for the postseason this year.
