Maibec millworkers face temporary layoff

    MASARDIS, Maine — A Quebec-based company that completed the purchase of Fraser Timber’s lumber mill in Masardis in January will temporarily layoff its 135 employees due to market conditions.
The layoff at Maibec will last four weeks, according to Charles Tardif, vice president of Maibec.

Woodland man accused of domestic violence assault, OUI

WOODLAND, Maine — A Woodland man was charged with multiple crimes late Thursday evening after he allegedly assaulted a woman and broke her phone during the altercation.
Sheriff Darrell Crandall of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department said in a written statement Friday evening that the office received an emergency 9-1-1 call from a woman reporting what appeared to be a domestic violence incident occurring on the Brown Road in Woodland.

Maine, Canadian potato farmers learn from Argentine counterparts

    LIMESTONE, Maine — Maine and Canadian potato growers and McCain Foods executives traveled 12,000 miles south this winter to visit with their counterparts in Argentina to see what they could learn from each other.
The group of 10 New Brunswick and six Maine growers, all of whom have contracts with McCain Foods, traveled to the country in January to observe how they grow potatoes for processing in Argentina, according to Yves Leclerc, McCain’s director of agronomy for North America. Information about the trip was only recently mentioned in the company’s June newsletter.

The amended version of LD 750 sponsored by Rep. Ralph Chapman, D-Brooksville, was rejected after more than two hours of floor speeches.

Wet spring for potato growers

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Despite a slightly wet, cold spring, most of the potato growers across the state have their crops planted, according to industry officials.
“We have had rain as of late, and planting is weather dependent,” but 80 percent or more of the state’s farmers have their crops in the ground, Don Flannery, executive director of the Maine Potato Board in Presque Isle, said earlier this week.
“They need warm, dry conditions,” Flannery said, adding that growers in the state are expected to plant 51,500 acres of potatoes this year.
