HWC gets OK to build line to N.B.

HOULTON, Maine — Officials at the Houlton Water Co. said Friday they are “very pleased” with a decision by state regulators allowing the company to build a direct electric transmission line to connect to New Brunswick Power.

John Clark, general manager of the municipally owned utility, said Friday that the move will save “millions of dollars” for its customers over the coming years as it switches over to getting all of its electricity from New Brunswick by sometime in 2019.

Houlton grad is Grammy finalist

WINDHAM, Maine— Looking back, Richard Nickerson, director of choral activities at Windham High School, can’t recall a time in his life when he wasn’t surrounded by music.

Growing up in Houlton, his mother, Jan, was a “fabulous musician,” he said Friday, a nurse by trade who would gather her husband, Ted, a bank president, and her children around the piano at night for singalongs.

Two to return to Maine for trial

HOULTON, Maine — Two Massachusetts men who were indicted last month in Aroostook County on murder charges in connection with the death of an Oakfield man have waived extradition and will be returned to Maine soon, a spokesman for the attorney general’s office said Friday.

Three residents of Massachusetts — Marcus Asante, 21, of Fitchburg, Darin Goulding, 27, of Leominster, and Tia Leigh Ludwick, 24, of Fitchburg — were each indicted by the Aroostook County grand jury on Nov. 10 on charges of murder and robbery in connection with the death of Douglas Morin Jr., 31, whose body was found on Oct. 16 in a vehicle on PD Road in Sherman.

Houlton finalizes chief, settles with former officer

HOULTON, Maine — Town councilors finalized the hiring of the newest chief of the Houlton Police Department Monday evening, while also agreeing to pay $20,000 to resolve a personnel issue with a former police officer.

During the hour-long meeting, councilors spent 15 minutes in executive session discussing the offer of probationary employment for Timothy Deluca, who will become the new chief starting on Jan. 3.

State Police seek details on SUV after crash

MONTICELLO, Maine — Maine State Police are seeking the public’s help in locating a sport utility vehicle that a Houlton man claimed contributed to an accident on Route 1 in Monticello on Thursday.

The crash occurred just before 3:30 p.m. when Jonathan Willigar, 28, of Houlton was northbound on the roadway in his 1998 Ford Ranger, State Police Sgt. Jeff Clark said in a written statement Friday.

KVHC purchases more property in Houlton

HOULTON, Maine — A health care facility that has continued to expand since opening here in December 2005 is once again buying property in the community, according to town officials.

Katahdin Valley Health Center bought property at 7 Florence Avenue in June and, on Friday, Dec. 2, tore down a two story structure on it that once served as a boarding home before it fell into disrepair.

HOULTON, Maine — Six years ago, Eleanor Schools of Houlton saw that her husband, Raymond, was having a harder time getting around. When he came to her and asked if she was interested in selling their house and moving into an apartment that would be easier to manage, she instantly agreed.
