County residents weigh in on presidential candidates

HOULTON, Maine — Wanda Drew of Houlton said she has “never voted Democrat in her life” but one presidential candidate has ultimately changed her mind for the first time in 42 years — Donald Trump.

“Once they nominated him at the Republican National Convention, that was it,” she said last week. “I realized that I could not support a candidate who had made so many statements that were contrary to my beliefs, such as being unsupportive of women and against immigration. I knew that I just had to vote my heart this election cycle, which is what I am planning to do.”

Houlton couple wants trail reopened

HOULTON, Maine — The owners of a home located near a town-owned walking trail that runs through Riverfront Park appeared before the Town Council on Tuesday, Oct. 11, to ask the board to reopen a portion of the trail to vehicles to give them additional access to their property.

Trial in Oakfield double homicide scheduled Dec. 2 in Machias court

OAKFIELD, Maine — The trial of a Houlton man accused of killing an Oakfield couple has been rescheduled to start with jury selection on Dec. 2.

The trial will be held in Washington County Superior Court in Machias, a court clerk confirmed Tuesday.

Matthew Davis, 35, is accused of killing Michael Kitchen, 51, and Heidi Pratt, 49, on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013.The trial originally was to be heard in Houlton Superior Court last month, but a jury could not seated.

Aroostook County residents recall boy lost on a mountain

HOULTON, Maine — Brian Crane, 48, of Houlton, vividly remembers the day approximately 38 years ago that author Donn Fendler came to his school after his class had read and extensively studied his book, “Lost on A Mountain In Maine.”

Crane was in the sixth grade at the former Lambert School, which is now Greater Houlton Christian Academy in Houlton. After one of his classmates had written and asked Fendler to come and speak to the class, the author obliged.
