LDS missionaries serve Houlton area

HOULTON, Maine — Four new missionaries are now out and about in the area. Sister Koyle, Sister Kesler, Elder Williams and Elder Taufer will serve the region on behalf of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Houlton boys top Foxcroft for third straight win

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Tim Brewer is game planning for a lot of unfamiliar opponents this winter, his first as head coach of the Houlton High School boys basketball team.

The Shiretowners’ 18-game schedule includes 13 different opponents, none of whom Brewer coached against in a formal setting while leading his alma mater, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill, to 251 victories and four state Class D championships over 15 years.

Girls basketball team tops Foxcroft to stay unbeaten

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine— After struggling to fend off Foxcroft Academy’s formidable front line for more than a half Thursday afternoon, the Houlton girls basketball team turned up the intensity and surged past the Ponies 60-47.

Birch Point Bowling

The Birch Point women’s bowling league was busy over the holidays as teams competed in regular play. The top 6 teams as of Dec. 27 were as follows: 1, Twisted Sisters, 65-15; 2, County Girls, 57-23; 3, Incredibowls, 39-41; 4, W.W.B., 32-48; 5, The Pin-Up Girls, 31-49; 6, Gutter Gang, 16-64.

New McDonald’s opens early

HOULTON, Maine — Forty-one years after the old building with the distinct copper roof and wood-burning fireplace was built and three months after it was razed, a new McDonald’s restaurant has opened in Houlton.

Approximately 30 people attended a ribbon cutting and early preview of the new Houlton store before its official opening at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
