A recent donation to the Make-A-Wish program

Carmichael speaks to Houlton Rotary

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Rotary Club met on Monday, Dec. 12, for its regular luncheon meeting. The guest of honor was Marie Carmichael from the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department. Carmichael received a check from the club for $15,000 to benefit the new cross country ski and snowshoe program.

Gas prices on the rise

HOULTON, Maine — Average retail gasoline prices in Maine have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.30/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 1,228 gas outlets in Maine. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.24/gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Maine during the past week, prices yesterday were 17.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 7.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 10.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 24.5 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Tis the season

To the editor:

During this busy season, many of us are busy shopping and decorating for the upcoming holidays. Houses decorated with brilliantly colorful lights can be seen and admired by the masses. Some of these displays can truly be spectacular. But, there is another type of lights that I want to remind you about as we scurry around town trying to finish or, if you’re like me, begin your holiday shopping.

Thanking the town for their support

To the editor:

Words cannot even begin to describe how thankful we are to live in such a caring and giving community. Your outpouring of support and kindness is truly amazing.

When things get tough, no one is afraid to lend a helping hand. Simon has a long road ahead of him, but thanks to all of your support, this road will be a bit less burdensome.

Vigils for peace continue

To the editor:

As we approach the birthday of the Prince of Peace, Jesus’ own ways and teachings of non-violence come to the fore in Pope Francis’ important statement released Dec. 12, 2016 entitled: “Non-violence — a Style of Politics for Peace.”

In a world streaming with refugees from the terrors of war, this welcome message will be delivered verbally by the Pope on Jan. 1, 2017 — the annual World Day of Peace.

It’s the thought that counts

To the editor:

I often hear people complaining about Christmas gifts they receive — ties they never wear, hand-knit sweaters that don’t fit or are awful in design, another pair of slippers they have to “ooh” over and then stuff in the closet along with last year’s, a fruitcake they’ll eventually throw away, or any number of other gifts they have to pretend they like.

 Improvements — Geo. R. Avery has been making some improvements on the interior of his store and pool room during the past week. A new and up-to-date pool table has been added, and the whole store has been brightened with paint.
