Trip — Mr. and Mrs. Cecil McGinley left last week on a trip extending as far as Washington, D.C., visiting Boston and New York en route.

My husband John and I live in the backwoods of northern Maine. We are the parents of one biological son and 14 adoptees. When our son Jared went off to college, the house was quiet and lonely.
In 1988, while sitting in our bedroom one night in New Mexico watching the evening news, a 12-year-old girl in residential care was featured on “Wednesday’s Child.” She just wanted a place to go for Christmas. It was as though lightning struck our house.
Somebody recently asked me what kind of cat Samantha is. “A darn cat,” I replied.
Which I think is true of most cats, at least the ones we’ve had…or the ones that have had us.
This one leaped — or fell — out of an open window two days ago. And we saw her since and finally caught her a night or two ago.
CARIBOU — The 60-voice Caribou Choral Society will present its annual Christmas concerts starting this Sunday in Madawaska, with performances next weekend in Presque Isle and Caribou. The group is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year under the leadership of conductor Dan Ladner, and invites the public to attend one or all of the shows.
Several sales are planned this Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, to benefit various groups.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Houlton will host a craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church.
Also in Houlton, the Ark Animal Sanctuary will host Miracle on Mechanic Street at the Hollywood Pet Salon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
HOULTON, Maine — Greater Houlton Christian Academy has released the honor roll for the first quarter of the 2016-17 school year. The following were included.
GRADE 4 — Highest honors: Teanne Ewings and Ava Whited. High honors: Abigail Duff, Hunter Duttweiler, Sarah Matheson and Natalee McCarthy. Honors: Kaylee Hayes and Lily Monarca.
GRADE 5 — Highest honors: Leanne Ross and Joely Stone. High honors: Gabrielle Cirulli, Aleyah Matheson, Seth Quint and Anicia Whited.
GRADE 6 — Highest honors: Marissa Dow, Samuel Duff, Andrew Duttweiler and Sadie Thompson. High honors: Ryan Mitchell.
Wednesday, Nov. 30 — Corn chowder, toasted cheese sandwich, saltine crackers, fresh broccoli/dip, apples.
Thursday, Dec. 1 — Hot pork and gravy sandwich, oven baked fries, steamed spinach, cranberry sauce, peaches.
Friday, Dec. 2 — Pizza (pepperoni, cheese, veggie), fresh salad bar, fruit, fruit juice.
