Shake, rattle and grunt approach to deer hunting often works

For most Aroostook deer hunters, pursuing bucks offers a solitary, self-satisfying venture. Tagging a big deer requires a good deal of perseverance and skill. A bit of luck doesn’t hurt either, especially if venison ends up in the freezer for several consecutive seasons. Whether a hunter is sitting on a stand, still hunting thick woods or tracking on fresh snow, stealth and silence remain crucial elements of successfully putting a deer in the sights. At least that’s what most experienced hunters will preach, but during the rut, a different approach often works which involves making some noise to coax deer to the shooter.

MSP to increase holiday patrols

The Maine State Police will have additional troopers on patrol and in their plane in the air during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Col. Robert Williams, Maine State Police chief, said troopers will be looking for aggressive, impaired and texting drivers, as well as seat belt violators following a rash of fatal crashes this month.

Hunger advocate visits Valley

The Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised and distributed more than $6.5 million to help end hunger in Maine since 1990, has again partnered with Brenda Davis, who recently visited Aroostook County on the campaign’s 15th annual walking tour.
