100 Years Ago – Nov. 15, 1916

 60 years — Sixty years of wedded happiness is the record which Mr. and Mrs. Esmond Weed celebrated at their cozy home on Court Street on Nov. 9. It is a pleasant life’s journey up on which they look back happily and they are enjoying the years of later life in content and in good health. They were married in Monroe, Nov. of 1856 and nine children were born to them.

Finding family who served in past wars

 

Last time I wrote about finding records of your ancestors’ service in the Colonial and Revolutionary wars. In this column we’ll examine the conflicts of the 19th century: the War of 1812, Mexican-American, Civil, and the Spanish-American Wars.

Ancestry.com, U.S. version, and Fold3 ( www.fold3.com) are good sites to find information on those who served. The National Archives (NARA at archives.gov) houses all military pension and service records until World War I. On this site there are forms allowing you to order copies of service and pension records.

Newman is Houlton HS DAR Good Citizen

HOULTON, Maine — Houlton High School has announced that Kate Newman has been chosen to receive the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Good Citizen Award. Each year this prestigious award is presented to a high school senior who exemplifies the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.

Pet Talk

As you all know, the time is fast approaching for you to register and license your dogs and in order to do that they must be up to date on their rabies shots. To that end, the Houlton Humane Society will be hosting a Rabies Clinic Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Littleton Fire Department. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. you may bring your dogs, and cats.

Please make sure all dogs are on a leash and all cats are in carriers. The cost is $15 for a one-year rabies vaccination, $15 for a one-year distemper/parvo vaccination, $20 for a three-year rabies vaccination and $20 for a three-year distemper/lepto/one-year parvo vaccination. Please note that only cash or checks are accepted, we will not be able to process credit or debit cards.

World War II vet recalls service

Bill Hires takes part in Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

NEW LIMERICK, Maine — While most people were collecting candy Halloween weekend, Bill Hires of New Limerick was busy collecting some amazing memories.

Hires, a 92-year-old World War II veteran, got his first-ever glimpse of the some of the nation’s greatest monuments thanks to the Honor Flight Network.

Times earns awards in annual Better Newspaper Contest

 

The staff of Houlton Pioneer Times claimed 11 awards for journalism excellence recently in the 2016 Better Newspaper Contest, sponsored by the Maine Press Association.

The awards were presented Oct. 29 during the MPA’s annual awards banquet, held this year in South Portland.
