Pet Talk

As you know, it’s been a long season for Houlton Humane and someone asked me the other day why we were still suffering the effects of one tragic event. I explained to her that a single mistake is like an atom bomb, it makes a big noise and then the fallout continues for months, sometimes years. It takes a very long time for the air to clear.

Taking analogies one step further, it’s very much like being married, finding out your partner did something unforgivable, divorcing, and then blaming the new spouse every chance you get. He had nothing to do with the first event, but your anger is still there so you take it out on someone who had nothing to do with it.

What does the word “commitment” mean to you? According to many, it is the act when you dedicate yourself to something, such as a person or cause. According to the Cambridge Dictionary online, it is “a willingness to give your time and energy to something that you believe in, or a promise or firm decision to do something.” In our district this year, our word of the year just happens to be “commitment.”

Cooking with Susie Q-traditional salsa & fresh tomato soup

This recipe for salsa is my favorite. I came across it a few years ago and now make it every year. I’ve made it with and without the hot peppers and we liked it both ways. We also have added corn and cooked red or black beans a couple of times to this same basic recipe. It tastes great and you can add as much or as little as you like, make sure you have extra jars ready, as adding the corn and beans does increase the volume. My family likes it better than the commercial salsa. I hope you like it as much as we do.
