Extension’s 32nd spud conference next week

PRESQUE ISLE — Registration is open for theUni versity of Maine Cooperative Extension’s 32nd annual Maine potato conference and trade show, which will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18, and Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center. The conference is designed for potato producers, farm workers and crop advisers.

Health access foundation funds Houlton initiative

HOULTON, Maine — The Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) has selected Houlton and 10 other Maine communities to implement projects in the foundation’s “Healthy Community” grant initiative.

Healthy Houlton, a project of Aroostook County Action Program, will receive $187,500 from this grant.

The grants are part of MeHAF’s work to improve health and promote collaborative, locally led efforts that can help transform communities into supportive environments that enable people to live healthier lives.

Island Falls news

It’s fully winter, and in Island Falls, it looks like it. The snowbanks are high, the roads are messy and ice is a factor on roofs, walks and in unexpected places.

Snow and ice can be dangerous, but can also be useful and fun. Ice shacks are out on Pleasant Pond and Mattawamkeag Lake, as fishing season opened Jan. 1. I’ve seen photos of some nice fish taken already and I’m sure there will be more.
