1966: Parking lot proposed

115 Years Ago — Jan. 1, 1902

     Notice — Until further notice, the shoe dealers will close their stores on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings of every week.

     Late — The passenger train due here at 10:15 p.m. Monday did not arrive until 8:00 Tuesday morning. The delay was occasioned by a snow plow train running into the rear of a freight train near Staceyville, resulting in a grand mix-up on the track. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Rangers urge caution on ice

    T6 R11 WELS, Maine — Rangers on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (AWW) on Dec. 29, 2016 reported thin ice in the middle of the larger headwater lakes, and advised ice fishermen to use caution when heading out to fish. Ice fishing season began on Jan. 1, 2017.

New wardens graduate from CJA

     VASSALBORO, Maine — The Maine Criminal Justice Academy graduated 61 new police officers on Friday, Dec. 16, from the 18-week Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (BLETP) in Vassalboro. Of those 61 officers, five were Maine game wardens who will now be entering their next phase of training.

One of the new graduates has been assigned to the Mars Hill area.

MSSM student becomes national youth delegate

     LIMESTONE, Maine — Lily Tedford, a junior at the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), was recently selected as one of only two students representing Maine as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C., next April. This selection also includes a ten thousand dollar college scholarship award.

Report supports need for retention

     Since its inception the nonprofit Aroostook Aspirations Initiative (AAI) has worked toward laying the foundation of a better future for The County’s youth and the region’s economy. While it’s a known fact that northern Maine struggles to hold onto its young folks, AAI hopes to lessen the burden of outmigration by showing Aroostook high school grads that they can prosper right here at home.

     First of all I apologize for not getting this out earlier.  I was busy with opening up a few sections of our trails in the Caribou area.  Most and all clubs are reporting very good conditions with most trails have been signed.

Meth-related charges still prevalent in County

     CARIBOU, Maine —  The Aroostook County grand jury handed down indictments against 25 individuals Friday, Dec. 9, 2016 and the majority of them once again were for crimes related to the possession, sale or manufacturing of drugs.
