Judging from an item in the Dec. 14 Republican it looks for all the world like we’re about due for another outbreak of Vahlsing disease. Loring Development Administration President Carl W. Flora is already infected, showing classic signs of boundless enthusiasm over some mysterious scheme for which he could not provide any details, but would require complete refurbishing of at least five old, rusty metal buildings at the cost of $5 million. Despite having no knowledge of the nature of this grand new industrial scheme, or what working skills would be needed, he predicts it could create 350 jobs in four years and up to 750 jobs after eight years. But first — and here’s the catch — local sources would have to come up with “matching funds” of $2.5 million.

I recently had the honor of being sworn in as the senator for Maine’s District 1. While I have been here before, it’s still a great feeling to be back in the Senate chamber, greeting my old friends and meeting some new ones.
Somebody recently asked me what kind of cat Samantha is. “A darn cat,” I replied.

New telephone — A telephone has been placed in the woolen mill, also one in W.B. Hall’s residence, Main Street, and one in Irving & Ricker’s potato house at the B.&A. station during the past week.
Fast horses — Quite a number of fast horses were spotted on Sweden Street, Wednesday afternoon, attracting quite a crowd of people.
AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. Paul R. LePage has signed an emergency proclamation to ensure Maine residents receive heating oil deliveries without delay.
