Celebrating our 137th anniversary

     Did you know Saturday, January 14 marked our 137th anniversary? Here’s a little bio about our history, compiled in a previous issue by managing editor Mark Putnam:

Streaking Tigers take on Bears, Vikes host Warriors in Wednesday matchups

     It’s a quick turnaround for coach Logan McLaughlin’s Fort Fairfield Tigers. Following a dominating performance last night at home against the Washburn Beavers, Fort Fairfield is back to work tonight in an important contest against Easton, the fourth-place team in Class D North with a 7-5 record. When the two teams met in Fort Fairfield on Dec. 13, the Tigers snagged a hard-fought 49-45 victory.

University’s hoop teams back in action

     The UMPI Owl men’s basketball team will try to get back to the .500 mark when they travel to Auburn to take on Central Maine Community College at 7:30 p.m. tonight. UMPI won the first matchup back in November at Wieden Gymnasium, 54-52.

RSU 39 holding public meetings

CARIBOU, Maine — For over a year, RSU 39 has been planning to place a new preK-8 school in Caribou, on a lot now occupied by Teague Park. The project, in total, would cost about $48 million, with $45 million coming from the State Department of Education.

Caribou authorizes rescue truck replacement

CARIBOU — City Council recently authorized the replacement of Caribou Fire Department’s Engine No. 1 truck as well as their rescue vehicle with a single rescue pumper. In his statement to the city, Fire Chief Scott Susi estimated that the $585,000 rescue pumper will save the department money in the long run, as it would cost roughly $525,000 just to replace Engine No. 1.

Limestone to begin budget discussion

LIMESTONE, Maine — The town of Limestone may not hold their annual town meeting until mid-June, but Town Manager Fred Ventresco says the budget process will begin in late January.

County commissioners re-elect chairman

HOULTON, Maine — Aroostook County commissioners started out the new year with an organizational meeting on Jan. 3 that included re-electing their longtime chairman and approving a number of contracts.

Justice overturns tax abatements on barns in Easton

     CARIBOU — A Superior Court justice has overturned a decision by Aroostook County commissioners that had granted tax abatements to Amish families in Easton who said their barns were overassessed in a 2015 property tax revaluation.
