Speakers discuss drugs, race

League announces All-Aroostook honorees

The Aroostook League has announced its All-Aroostook selections for the fall sports season and they are as follows:

Boys Class B/C soccer

Caribou: Austin Cheplic, Alex Ezzy and Andre Rossignol; Fort Kent: Micah Charette, Nathan Michaud and Niko Naranja; Houlton: Zach Fitzpatrick, Dylan Johnston and Jake Worthley; LCS/MSSM: Tobyn Blatt and Mathew Pelkey; and Presque Isle: Nick Bartlett, Pat Cash, Jake Kinney, Khasen Lowe and Josiah Morse.

Former Tigers are leaders for UMPI women

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle women’s basketball team adds five new players and will look to the direction of first-year head coach Traci Halvorson to improve on a 4-20 record from a year ago.

Eighth-graders victorious

     The Caribou Middle School eighth-grade boys’ basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season after knocking off Central Aroostook last Wednesday, 51-29, in a game played in Mars Hill.

Confernece lauds UMPI athletes

     The North Atlantic Conference announced postseason awards for cross country and volleyball last week. Elise Gudde of Caribou was one of the UMPI athletes recognized.

     VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Five personal best times by the nine UMPI competitors made for a strong 10th-place finish at the USCAA Nationals Friday.

Husson hoop squad includes local talent

     WATERVILLE, Maine — Bangor-based Husson University has claimed the top spot in the 2016-17 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll. The defending champions earned five of the 10 first-place votes for a total of 91 points, while Maine Maritime Academy was selected second after earning two first place votes for a total of 85 points and Castleton University earned third with 79 points after claiming one first place vote.

Church sets Christmas fair

NEW SWEDEN — Organizers at New Sweden’s Covenant Church are preparing for the annual Christmas Fair, for Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.   Lunch will be available. Tables will feature baked goods, wreaths, crafts, antiques and more.
