Sync It Up! aids Hope and Justice

CARIBOU, Maine — A friendly lip syncing and dance contest will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at the Caribou Performing Arts Center as a fundraiser for Hope & Justice Project.

Sync It Up, Caribou! will include a lip syncing and dance competition for participants of all ages, as well as a remembrance ceremony for the many individuals and families who have been killed as a result of domestic violence in the state of Maine.

Local soccer teams reach playoffs

The soccer season will be extended for at least three high school teams in the region.

The Caribou girls, LCS/MSSM boys and Fort Fairfield boys all have post-season bids wrapped up. The Viking and Eagle teams will host preliminary playoff matches later this week against yet to be determined opponents, while the Tigers are the top team in Class D and have earned a bye into next week’s quarterfinal round.

Viking boys capture XC title for fifth time

The cross country regionals are set for this Saturday at Belfast, and local teams got in some preparation for the championship meet this past week.

The Caribou Viking boys had a particularly strong showing in the Penobscot Valley Conference Class B championships, held at Old Town Saturday. Coach Roy Alden’s squad won its fifth consecutive league title by featuring the top two finishers and five of the top 12.

“It was a great day and we ran extremely well,” said Alden. “The focus was there today.”

Owls wrapping up season

The fall season is ending soon for the University of Maine at Presque Isle athletic teams, but they were able to enjoy some success over the weekend.

Owl volleyball wins a pair

The UMPI volleyball team won two of three matches played during their recent trip to Vermont.

The Owls are now 5-22 on the season and host the University of Maine at Fort Kent today for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. UMPI’s senior players will be recognized at the final home match of the season.

Coty advances in Elks soccer contest

The state Elks Soccer Shootout was held in Augusta over the weekend with four Aroostook County youths advancing to the New England championships. One of them was Kearstin Coty of Caribou, who won the title in the 12-13 girls’ division.

Other winners were Raiden Cochran of Easton (age 7 and under boys), Jenna Cochran of Easton (10-11 girls) and Brandon Barton of Houlton (8-9 boys).

Club donates to Camp Adventure

CARIBOU, Maine — Several members of the Downeast Chapter of the Defenders Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club recently made the trip up Route 1 from Machias to Cary Medical Center to give a $1,000 donation to Camp Adventure.

This is the third year the Washington County Downeast Chapter has had a charity ride event to raise funds for the summer session.

AAI awards mentors who inspire

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The third annual Night With the Stars Gala, hosted by Aroostook Aspirations Initiative, took place Sept. 17, 2016 in Presque Isle. Designed to celebrate students in the Gauvin Scholar program, the event also highlights business, community, and education leaders throughout Aroostook County with awards for Mentor of the Year, Innovative Educator and Aroostook Business of the Year. This year, the organization also introduced a new award, The Road Back Home award.

The 2016 Mentor of the Year Award, sponsored by Cary Medical Center, was presented to James Smith, a history teacher at Fort Fairfield High School. Nominated by the first-year Gauvin Scholars, the Mentor of the Year award is given to an individual who has positively impacted the lives of Aroostook County students.
