Why no Candidate Forums?

To the editor:

Voters need accurate information to be able to make a decision about who to vote for. The best way for voters to understand a candidate’s values and where they stand on issues is to hear directly from the candidate. As Chair of the Aroostook County Democratic Committee, I was frustrated in 2012 when planned candidate forums were cancelled because Republican candidates refused to participate in them.

Bravo! What a show!

What a color show we had this fall, and did those colors ever come on fast! They came on a bit later this year, but when it finally happened it was electrifying! We are certainly very privileged to live in our little corner of Paradise, here in The County, where we get such a show every Autumn.

Of course, we’ll soon have dramatic changes to our landscape, as the trees shed their leaves, and there will be dramatic changes in our temperatures as well! By the end of October, the average high at Caribou is 45, but then, by the end of November, it is only 32. And it snows In November. Caribou averages about 11 inches of snow during the month, but one year, 1974, it was the snowiest month of the entire winter! A huge snowstorm stranded many Thanksgiving travelers, and many folks reading this remember that quite well, I’m sure!

LUPC seeks zoning, land use input

The Land Use Planning Commission is currently reviewing the adjacency principle, which is a policy that guides where new zones for development can be created, via a survey.

The Commission oversees zoning for unorganized townships, plantations, and some towns. Zoning is a map and set of rules that say what type of buildings or uses are allowed in any given place. The goal of zoning is to help avoid conflicts between different types of uses and make it easier to predict how an area will change over time.

Regional marijuana campaign launches

Group educates parents on effects for teens

The Maine Network of Healthy Communities (MNHC) has launched a statewide campaign called “Talk About It Today” to educate parents in Maine about the changing face of the marijuana industry and provide families with information they need to start conversations about this important issue.

“MNHC hopes to educate parents about the ways in which the drug has changed over the years, so they can, in turn, educate their children about the drug’s potential dangers,” Jamie Comstock, president of the organization, said. “We’re seeing historic low rates of youth cigarette, alcohol and non-medical prescription drug use among youth. While this is excellent news, it concerns us that marijuana use rates remain stable, and according to the 2015 Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey the majority of Maine’s high school students don’t view regular marijuana use as harmful. Changes in state laws regarding marijuana use across the country, and media attention about the potential medicinal benefits of marijuana may be having an impact on this shift in attitudes.”

Guerrette receives SAM high rating

AUGUSTA, Maine — Timothy Guerrette, who is a candidate for Maine Senate District 1, has received an A+ rating from the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine (SAM).

SAM is the state’s largest sportsmen’s organization with more than 10,000 members. According to SAM officials, in considering their ratings, the group took a number of factors into consideration, such as the candidates’ stance on issues such as trapping, controlling the deer population, use of public lands and other hunting-related issues.
