Cup O’ Joe: Dance the night away

Friday was a big night in our household. It was time for the Houlton Elementary School father-daughter dance, which meant an opportunity for my youngest to dress up like a princess and spend the evening dancing the night away.
Dads actually get the benefit of much cooler events with their children than their spouses.
When was the last time you heard of a mother-son ball? Boys just aren’t into that, so moms often miss out.
At least they get to dress their daughters up before sending them off with their fathers, grandfathers or other significant male figure in their lives.

Life Lesson No. 20: Bring flowers to those you love

He took one hundred dollars from his top dresser drawer just before his sister picked him up on that cold February Sunday. The trees were dipped in silver, a strong affirmation that winter was not quite finished. He walked slowly into the Caribou Rite Aid, careful to avoid patches of ice concealed by the newly fallen snow.

Lesson 56: Count your blessings

I am guilty of taking many things in my world for granted, and one of them is warmth. Over the past three weeks or so, we have been wrestling with bitter, unforgiving cold weather. My house is warm. My car is warm. My office is warm. My clothing is sufficient.

Life Lesson 23: Recount your adventures with vigor and enthusiasm

What started out to be a passing thought, turned out to be the trip of a lifetime. During the summer of 1965, my parents decided we would head to Prattsburgh, New York in a tomato red Rambler station wagon to see my mother’s oldest sister, Helen, and her only son, Keith.

Cup O’ Joe: Another sad end to the NFL season

Cheering for a professional sports team can be both highly rewarding and bitterly disappointing. When your favorite team wins, there is a feeling of euphoria that overcomes you. But if your team loses, melancholy often sets in.
Such was the case this past weekend as the New England Patriots played in the American Conference Championship hosting the Baltimore Ravens. With a win, the Patriots would advance to the Super Bowl for the second straight year.

Life Lesson 31: Be cautious on a snowmobile

The day was pure. Severe freezing temperatures caused my nostrils to cling together like Velcro. We owned a 1967 Evinrude snowmobile; blue and white with a glaring orange seat and heavy frame. The Evinrude was mine to drive and on this January Sunday, my mother decided we should go riding down the middle of the Maysville Road on that shy old machine.

Cup O’ Joe: Time to pinch pennies

Changes in federal payroll withholdings went into effect with the new year, resulting in smaller paychecks for most Mainers to the tune of about $700-$1,000 per year.

Lesson 24: If you back your car into a lake when you are 17, tell your father the truth

The warm night swooped down like a welcome blackbird; seeking the perfect spot to drop a slice of adventure. I was seventeen, restless and powerful behind the wheel of a maroon, 1968 Dodge Polara. There were four of us on this pilgrimage and we were conjuring up the perfect spell to attract the four young men pursuing us; waving a lasso of loud music and laughter that flirted with the Dodge and our hearts.

Flashing red: The bottom line in Benghazi

While our country spent September 11, 2012, remembering the terrorist attacks that took place eleven years earlier here at home, brave Americans posted at U.S. government facilities in Benghazi, Libya were fighting for their lives against a terrorist assault. When the fight ended, four patriotic Americans, including our Ambassador, were dead. While we mourn their deaths, it is also crucial that we examine the circumstances of the attack in Benghazi.
