When the Legislature established the Maine Veterans’ Homes back in 1977, the state made a commitment to the men and women serving in our nation’s armed forces — a commitment to repay their service by making sure they would be cared for in their later years.

Investing in the future of Aroostook County

The federal government funding bill that was signed into law on March 15 includes more than $200 million I successfully secured for 105 vital projects across Maine.  These investments will support initiatives by Maine’s state government, municipalities, and non-profit organizations that will promote job creation and economic development, improve infrastructure, expand community resources for Mainers, and protect our environment.

It’s no fluke that Maine’s state flag depicts a sailor.  Much of our early prosperity came from our proximity to the sea that was our true lifeblood. In our earliest days no one traveled by land unless forced to.

A wartime listening post

During World War II, Presque Isle was the first location of a very important part of this country’s defense.  On May 9, 1942, Lt. Gen. Henry “Hap” Arnold determined there was a great need for monitoring radio transmissions of our own pilots to keep them from inadvertently giving away secrets to the enemy, and also to monitor those of enemy pilots to gain the upper hand in the war.

Elevator encounters

You can learn a great deal by either stepping on or off an elevator. I recall several instances throughout my life — all involving an elevator — that have had somewhat of an impact on how I comprehend the world around me.

A friendship that lives on

She moves gently into my thoughts often. I knew her in school but my  conversations with her were few. I recall her having very long, honey blonde hair  and honest eyes that seemed to be waiting for a reason to smile.
