In honor of bridges

November is Historic Bridge Awareness Month.  Today with modern transportation, we often take the very existence of bridges for granted.  Try to imagine what it must have been like for early settlers in the Presque Isle area alone where we were bounded on the west of the village by the stream and on the north and east by the Aroostook River.

Wonders of the woods

I love being in the woods. This is something I have just recently discovered, by the way. 
As a child, exploring the wooded area surrounding my grandmother’s home, I took every tree, wildflower, and small forest creature for granted.

Don’t duck the issue

Ducks — do not stop for the ducks. A new sign in the walking path area of A.R. Gould Hospital asks drivers not to stop for the ducks. This year, the fecundity of waterfowl in the duck pond has been very notable. What to do about the ducks?

October Conservation Corner, 2021

My garden is large enough that I am able to rotate vegetables and a cover crop each year. For the past several years, I have experimented with different kinds of cover crop mixes and generally throw some tried and true seeds together, broadcast with a hand spinner, rake them in, and hope for the best. And the best is what I got this year.

What you need to know for Election Day

General elections will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 2.  Presque Isle residents who desire to vote in person may do so at the Sargent Family Community Center on Chapman Street from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day.

Preventing nursing home closures and protecting patients’ access to care

The COVID pandemic has taken an enormous toll on our health care providers, particularly long-term care facilities and rural hospitals.  Four Maine nursing homes announced in September that they would be shutting their doors, displacing more than 100 residents, and many other long-term care facilities are struggling to stay open.

County societies

In Maine when we think of researching in an historical society we look in towns, cities, or the Maine Historical Society in Portland.  County historical societies are nonexistent here.

Spooky tales by lantern light

October is the month in which kids start looking forward to picking out Halloween costumes and some people decorate their front porches with mums.  It is also a time when spooky tales seem to come to the forefront of everyone’s minds.
